barf (blogs are really fun) is an extremely minimal blog generator. The entire build script is >170 lines of shell, designed for people focused on writing rather than tinkering.

No front matter or templating. Just create markdown files and run make build. The script handles both blog posts and normal pages with automatic RSS generation.

Portable across Linux, macOS, and OpenBSD. Requires rsync, coreutils, and MultiMarkdown for processing.

The philosophy is suckless-adjacent: keep it simple, keep it small, keep it working. A fork of Karl Bartel's blog.sh, modified to be even more minimal.

Static site generatorsA static site generator takes markdown and templates and compiles them into plain HTML files with no server-side code and no database. For a digital garden that's meant to be worked on continuously, the boring reliability is a great asset.… like 11ty offer more features but barf wins on simplicity. If you just want to write and publish without configuration overhead, barf is hard to beat.
